Seth Godin: “After you raise your hand…”

by Dave ChaceMay 27, 2018

At MaxDisclosure, we’re big fans of the insights and ideas on Seth’s blog, and read each post. Read this one every morning this week; let Seth’s words guide the way you see and discuss your intentions.

We speak in the language of next steps: assurances that tangible actions will take place in order to drive progress. When I promise to send a draft statement in the next 10 minutes; say I’ll come into work on a Saturday; or promise to take over and drive a new initiative — I know I’m laying out a length of measuring tape that my actions must meet.

We also pay attention to the measuring tape that others lay out for themselves, and how those actions are executed. When they measure up, I trust their information and promises. But when partners’ little promises become little white lies with no follow-through, it becomes clear they are communicating to escape engagements, or sound impressive in the moment. I may not say something when I don’t receive a statement within 10 minutes, or find out you stayed home Saturday, or procrastinated on that new initiative — but I do notice, and remember. You should, too.

As Seth says: show up, and keep showing up.
