Military communicators, today at 1:30 p.m. (eastern), the SecDef and Chairman will brief the press in the Pentagon.
Watch live and pay attention.
It’s been exactly one year since then-SecDef Mattis briefed the press. Some reporters have made a big deal about this.
Regardless of how we as a Defense Department got here, you have one clear next step: watch live and pay attention.
Three reasons to tune in:
1. To hear the content. The things our senior leaders talk about will be news. Possibly, news important to your organization’s resources, authorities and support. This briefing may give you a sense for your organization’s relevance to national messages. Make sure you’re aligned.
2. To hear the questions. We talk about how PAOs should think like journalists to craft realistic questions, and acceptable answers. This is easier when you can picture the Pentagon press corps following up on statements and requesting clarity.
3. To observe technique. You’ll have to prepare your commanders to speak to the media. One way to prepare is by watching pros speak to the media. “Ma’am, here are a few things you’ll see Gen. Dunford do when he speaks to the media. Here’s how you can incorporate them into this murder board.”
