The Hack and Flack

by Dave ButlerSeptember 16, 2019

I was TDY in New York when I met with FBI NY’s PAO.  She was great.  She had a real hold on her responsibilities, her organization and did a bunch of other things that made the people in her organization really appreciate her.

The NY based media, specifically the pros who covered legal stuff, appreciated her as well.

Ya know how I know the media appreciated her?

I found out at a Hack and Flack.

Yes, we (PAOs) are Flacks and clearly journalists are Hacks.

A Hack and Flack is a surprisingly useful, non-networking event.

Every month or two they hold a Hack and Flack.  One month the Hacks will pick the place, the next the Flacks will.

You will get together to continue the very important relationship you have.  You will drink a beer (or three) and talk about the issues of the day.  You will share frustrations and wins.

Everything will be off the record, because you’ve overtly stated as much.

The Hack and Flack I attended in NY was loud, hot and crowded.  About 30 people showed up.  I brought a friend.  It was good to meet with the legal/justice lead for CNN, NY Times and other outlets.  They thought it was good to meet me … I think.  We drank a few beers then left after about 2 hours.  That was it.  No speeches, no logistics, no pain.

See you at the next Hack and Flack.

Now go and do likewise.
