Network is a Noun, not a Verb

Business and military leaders will tell you to have a good network – just check LinkedIn.  You need professional colleagues who know and respect you and your work.  Studies show knowing a person, and vouching for them is important.  This is called a network – it’s a thing one has, due to their solid reputation.

There’s something else people do.  It’s also commonly referred to as “network” or “networking.”  It’s bullshit.  Some people think by grabbing a cup of coffee with someone or asking them about their family, they are networking.  These networkers think they will gain an advantage, they will build supporters, maybe get votes in the next election for the best person. They won’t.

Professionals vouch for professionals based on their professional reputation.  You diminish your professional reputation by wasting time networking.

Can we informally get together?  Should we grab a beer or eat lunch and get to know each other?  Absolutely, but expect nothing in return.  A wise man once told me, “Friendship is non-transactional.”

I’ve ranted about this before.  It was time for another.
