I Never Introduce My Rank

by Dave ButlerMarch 13, 2020

When I call an office I only use my first and last name with a friendly and excited tone.  I do this because I want to be treated well for being a human, not for my rank or status.  Rank and status also unnecessarily complicates simple tasks.

It’s interesting how some people respond.

Some people are super cool and helpful. They eagerly accept my question, treat me with respect and figure out how to help.

Some people are assholes. Interrupt me in mid-speech. Act condescending or dismissive. Look for reasons not to help.

Worse of all, some people are assholes then change when they find out who I am, especially if I outrank them or whatever.

Are these the same people who keep a public face for our organization?  Will these people be the first to meet a journalist who is preparing to write a story about us?

Which person are you?

To be clear, I never bow up on anyone or play gotcha. I actually try to get through the call without ever announcing my rank or position. Treat me however you’d like. I’m going to accomplish whatever I need to, either way.

In our office, we have a rule – Treat Everyone Like a VIP.

Have you talked with your peeps about how you expect people to be treated?
